While this photo is quite cheezy, I’m not gonna lie - it was my wallpaper for a hot minute! Three things led me to the topic of this post this week. 1) My favorite athlete, Mike Green, launched his own website. 2) I had a chance encounter with the New York Yankees. 3) The NFL’s ruling on Twitter & Facebook.

Now that augmented reality has established itself as the technology buzzword of the year, what impact will it have on social media? Google Trends shows the growth curve for augmented reality, first appearing in the United States in November 2008, and then picking up more steam in March and June of this year. Putting it in perspective though, over the past 12 months, there were 16 times as many searches for “widgets” and nearly 26 times as many searches for “Second Life.” It has some catching up to do with the emerging trends of yesteryear.

If you’re a football and baseball collector and had just enough money for one box of Icons, I’d recommend football . So while it’s clear that the football version was given more attention by the Upper Deck design staff, the baseball version is not too shabby either. In the defense of Upper Deck, the base card design is better than anything they have done in a while. Much like UDx, the card fronts match the team colors but it works a lot better in Icons.

It’s been many moons since I have step foot on a college campus. While I have many fond memories of my time in college, one memory stick out the most– how much I hated being broke. Fortunately, I was able to get a pretty decent job that kept a few pennies in my pocket but I was working 35 hours week. That kind of time commitment affected the classes I chose, the actiivites I could participate in, and the amount of time I could spend with peers. Today’s college students have many more choices avaiable to them.

There are almost as many hobbies around the planet as there are folk. Some are more popular than others. Folks all over like to collect numerous items like books, baseball cards, bobble heads, or model trains. Collecting die cast autos is a very popular pastime. Many people like the fact that you can build die cast cars as well as display them. There are some people who have made a SOHO business out of assembling model cars and then selling it to other collectors.

the other half being blue and red laser beams of course. As part of my continuing retrospective . . . . Being a big GI Joe fan growing up I made these file cards for my students. I moved to a more student-centered model later and built an Appleworks database 1 so they could put in their own pictures and information. Either way it was a fairly entertaining way to work with some fairly dull SOL information. We also used these cards to play a version of 20 questions.

Earlier this week I brought up the topic of sponsors giving away free product to websites and card blogs. While I do feel privileged to be on those short lists, as someone who has always supported the blogosphere I feel many more websites deserve complimentary product for reviews. Unfortunately, there is only so much to go around so today I am discontinuing the Wax Heaven Directory for a new project. The Wax Heaven Sample Pack Project will go out to other bloggers who would like to review products for their readers.

My old college roommate loves Jon Lajoie’s new Radio Friendly Song . He puts it on his Zune while playing one man beer pong so he can practice for the pong tournament he’s holding right before the epic Entourage marathon. [ Funny or Die ] This viral video of Jim Breuer pushing a crew member into a pool over a Pizza Hut stuffed crust pan pizza is so real, if you wrote a Wikipedia entry based on how real it is, the site editors would be like, “This is too real!!!” [ BWE ] Mike Judge compares Office Space to Extract , which seems like a weird strategy considering that Office Space doesn’t have a huge cult fanbase that loves it with the entirety of their nerd hearts.

It’s been several days since the news broke that a handful of NBA stars were suing the Topps Company for allegedly not bein paid what they were promised. Wax Heaven and several other sources ( including TMZ ) reported the news immediately without making any assumptions or giving an opinion on the matter. Since that time, Beckett has curiously avoided anything having to due with the lawsuit and instead has treated collectors to exclusive first looks into 2009 Topps Tribute and some more 2009 Topps UFC autographs.
